Anyone who has lived in a period home will appreciate the importance of ensuring major alterations are in keeping with the original design. When the building is a large Morris-designed home it is even more important. Acquired for redevelopment by Wokingham-based Foundation Land the house was run-down with a number of unsympathetic alterations.
The company was determined to restore it to its former glory. The exterior was rebuilt using the original plans to recreate the facade while nine luxury apartments were created within the building. Using the original plans as a guide, Foundation Land has created a gated development with underground parking that retains the look of a family home for the exterior and preserves the surrounding street scene. The interior has been replanned as apartments, each with its own unique appeal. Interior designer Debbie Norford-Jones and architect Jeff Brown from Foundation Land opted for a contemporary open plan living area using lots of natural wood and stone finishes. With the kitchen ‘on view’ at all times, the units became part of the living room furniture.
Optiplan was able to offer the wide choice of natural timber finishes that Debbie was looking for. Working with Natasha from Optiplan, Debbie decided on shaker style light oak units with antique brown granite work surfaces. Striking an unusual note, cupboard doors feature horizontal graining – Optiplan is one of the few kitchen companies to offer this as standard.
Natasha worked from plans provided by Debbie to create nine very different kitchens, while the Optiplan installers worked closely with the builders to ensure a perfect finished kitchen. With the bulk of the work completed, Natasha and Debbie put their heads together to provide the all important finishing touches, including striking glass shelving lit from below.
